background: sulfur mustard (sm) is an incapacitating chemical warfare agent, which has been widely employed in particular regions including iran. we investigated and reported delayed biochemical and hematological complications of sm in severely toxic iranian veterans 23 years after exposure. materials and methods: forty-two iranian veterans, residents of khorasan razavi, poisoned by sm, and suffering from clinical complications were investigated. a total of 30 healthy male volunteers were also selected as a control group. biochemical and hematological variables were measured for the case and control groups. data were analyzed using a student’s t-test by instat software (graphpad inc., san diego, ca) to determine significant differences between the data from the two groups. results: the percentages of reticulocytes were significantly higher in patients (0.82 Ⱡ0.04, p < 0.05). total protein and albumin levels were significantly lower in veterans (total protein: 7.58 Ⱡ0.07 g/dl, albumin: 4.97 Ⱡ0.04 g/dl, p < 0.01). in addition, we observed a significant increase in serum cholesterol (226.74 Ⱡ5.23 mg/dl, p < 0.01), triglyceride (173.53 Ⱡ17.05 mg/dl, p < 0.05),and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gtt) activity of the patients (44.04 Ⱡ3.35 iu/l, p < 0.05). conclusion: results showed that sm can cause long-term effects on some biochemical factors of veterans. as many of the functional tests of liver and kidney between two groups were statistically unchanged, it seems that the observed biochemical changes may be secondary to delayed respiratory complications of the patients.

Biochemical and hematological findings of Khorasan veterans 23 years after sulfur mustard exposure

BACKGROUND Sulfur mustard (SM) is an incapacitating chemical warfare agent, which has been widely employed in particular regions including Iran. We investigated and reported delayed biochemical and hematological complications of SM in severely toxic Iranian veterans 23 years after exposure. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty-two Iranian veterans, residents of Khorasan Razavi, poisoned by SM, and suf...

Relationship of Interleukin-4 and Interleukin-6 with Pigmentation Disorders in Sardasht Sulfur Mustard-Exposed Veterans 20 Years after Exposure

Aims: Pigmentation disorders are one of the main skin problems due to mustard gas exposure in chemically-injured veterans. The aim of this study as part of the Sardasht cohort study was to investigate the association between IL-6 and IL-4 and pigment disorders in chemically-injured veterans exposed to mustard gas. Materials & Methods: In this study, 500 subjects including 372 people expose...

Deoxyribonucleic acid damage in Iranian veterans 25 years after wartime exposure to sulfur mustard

BACKGROUND More than 100,000 Iranian veterans and civilians still suffer from various long-term complications due to their exposure to sulfur mustard (SM) during the Iran-Iraq war in 1983-88. The aim of the study was to investigate DNA damage of SM in veterans who were exposed to SM, 23-27 years prior to this study. MATERIALS AND METHODS Blood samples were obtained from the veterans and healt...

Effect of Sulfur Mustard Toxicity on FLT3-ITD Gene Mutation in Sulfur Mustard Veterans

Background: Sulfur mustard (SM) is a chemical blistering warfare that affects different organs especially hematopoietic system. Prevalence of acute myeloblastic and lymphoblastic leukemia is increased by sulfur mustard exposure. FLT3-ITD mutation can be effective on leukemogenesis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to verify the frequency of FLT3-ITD mutation in the patients who exposed to S...

Late-onset Radiologic Findings of Respiratory System Following Sulfur Mustard Exposure

Background: Sulfur mustard (SM) as a chemical warfare agent, increases permeability of bronchial vessels and damages airway epithelium. SM exposure causes debilitating respiratory complications. This study was designed to evaluate clinical respiratory manifestations, and to compare chest X ray (CXR) and high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scan of chest in SM exposed patients with respira...
